The team at Jem Archaeology Pty Ltd is led by Director Jen Burch. Jen is a fully qualified Archaeologist and Heritage Advisor with more than 12 years experience working in southeastern Australia. She has managed and worked on more than 450 archaeological projects for a variety of clients and developments, including residential, commercial and industrial developments, warehouse, factory and office developments, wind farms, mining projects, road and rail projects, pipelines, powerlines and associated infrastructure. Jen has authored or co-authored more than 300 approved Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Management Plans (CHMPs) and has an excellent working knowledge of the current Victorian Aboriginal and historical legislation.
Jen has experience in a variety of tasks, including project management, background research and due diligence assessments, archaeological survey, sub surface testing and salvage excavation, supervision of field work programs, Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal site identification, recording and photography, preparation of site cards, site significance assessment, development of recommendations to mitigate the impact of development upon Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal historical heritage, flaked stone and historical artifact recording, analysis and interpretation, communication and consultation with regulatory bodies (Aboriginal Victoria [AV] and Heritage Victoria [HV]), clients, landowners and Aboriginal Registered Aboriginal Parties (RAPs) and other Aboriginal corporation and community representatives, preparation of Consents to Disturb for HV, preparation of Historical Heritage Assessments (HHAs), preparation of Preliminary Aboriginal Heritage Tests (PAHTs), preparation of desktop, standard and complex Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Management Plans (CHMPs) and detailed Aboriginal place salvage reports.

Emily Evans is an Archaeologist/HA who is completing her Masters of Archaeology and Heritage Management through Flinders University, Adelaide, while working in the Victorian heritage management industry. Emily’s Masters project involves the analysis of vertebrate faunal remains from within anthropogenic shell middens located in Weipa, North Queensland. Emily has been involved in international archaeological projects including excavation of Etruscan sites in Italy and a Late Minoan IIIc/Archaic period settlement in Crete, Greece. Since starting with Jem Archaeology in early 2018, Emily has worked on more than 70 projects for a variety of clients and developments, including residential subdivisions, multi dwelling developments, utilities installations, road construction and commercial developments.
Emily has experience in a variety of tasks, including background research, archaeological survey, sub surface testing and salvage excavation, supervision of field work programs, Aboriginal site identification, recording and photography, faunal recording and analysis, communication and consultation with clients, landowners and RAPs and other Aboriginal corporations and community representatives and preparation of desktop, standard and complex CHMPs and Aboriginal place salvage reports.
Emily’s formal qualifications are as follows:
- Bachelor of Arts (Honours), Monash University, Clayton, (2014)
- Candidate, Masters of Archaeology and Heritage Management, Flinders University, Adelaide (2016 to present).
